Shackled and chained
To my dear old friends and new,
It’s nice to meet you! I've been shackled and bound.
Eighty years was my sentence and no crime could be found.
Now I'm the talk of the town. It was my cousin, you see, it had nothing to do with me.
In my youth, I spent my time looking at the sky, dreaming of all I could be.
What did the future hold for me?
In the new world I helped turn industrial revolution around.
Kings and queens adored me. I spent time with the president.
My favorite of all was spending time with the farmer and his family.
I sailed from sea to sea. Most people can't get enough of me.
When I heard the call to war sound, I jumped in without a frown.
I made best friends with every soldier I found.
It was a long hard battle but we won!
This is when my life started to take a turn for the worse.
All my friends turned on me - radio and even TV!
Parents whispered my name to children.
Must I be this scary? I was offered no defense!
They quickly decided, I was a menace to society. A life sentence was handed down to me.
As I sat I pondered, “What could be done?” The world quickly moved on.
Months turned to years, with no hope for my future.
The darkness set in, my body began to wither away.
Would I ever see the sun again?
The pendulum of public opinion has begun to swing yet again.
It looks like the villain is becoming the hero and friend; but, can she save the day this time around?
The world has changed since the last time we met. So many need my help.
I’m Free! I’m Free!
